Mamata on 4-day trip to north Bengal

Siliguri, Jul 10 : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived here today on a four-day official visit to north Bengal's three districts to take stock of the situation.

After landing at Bagdogra airport she drove straight to Jalpaiguri where she will hold a high-level meeting with district officials.

Many lowlying parts of the district have been affected due to overflow of river water fed by recent heavy monsoon rains.

From Jalpaiguri, she would leave for Coochbehar district where she would also hold meeting with the district officials, both civil and police tomorrow.

She would lay the foundation stone of Panchanan Verma University in Coochbehar and later flag off the New Jalpaiguri-Howrah Shatabdi Express by a remote crontrol.

The Shatabdi Express would be the fastest locomotive to connect north Bengal with Kolkata by covering 570 km in eight hours.

This train will run at 'open fast timing'. Scheduled services for the 12041 Howrah-New Jalpaiguri Shatabdi Express will start from Howrah on Thursday. The train will start from Howrah at 1415hrs and reach New Jalpaiguri at 2220hrs.

The 12042 New Jalpaiguri-Howrah Shatabdi Express will start from NJP at 0535hrs to reach Howrah at 1335hrs. The trains, in both directions will have seven AC chair car coaches and one executive car, apart from a generator car and an SLR bogie. On both directions, the trains will stop at Kishanganj, Malda Town and Bolpur and will run six days a week barring Sunday.

According to the official itinerary of the chief minister, Ms Banerjee is also scheduled to visit Kalimpong to attend the birth anniversary celebration of Nepali poet Kavi Bhanu Bhakta.

But there was no such official confirmation here as a model code of conduct was in in force in view of the Gorkhland Territorial Administration's elections to be held on July 29.

This is Ms Banerjee's first visit in north Bengal after the government announcement of the first election to GTA in Darjeeling hills. (UNI)
