Bimal Gurung becomes GTA's first chief executive

Darjeeling, Aug 4 (UNI): Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's president Bimal Gurung was today sworn-in as the first chief executive of the newly-formed Gorkhaland Territorial Adminsitration (GTA) after West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan administered oath and secrecy of the office.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Railway Minister Mukul Roy, Darjeeling's MP Jaswant Singh among others and scores of state and Central officials attended the colourful ceremony held at Chowrasta around 1115 hrs.

The GTA, signed on July 11, 2011 between the GJM, Centre and the state government has, now replaced the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) formed in 1988.

Wearing a multi-coloured traditional Nepali cap and a golden colour khada (scarf) Bimal Gurung, who revolted against GNLF supremo and DGHC chairman Subash Ghishing, took oath in Nepali.

He then went to sign a registered book amid cheers from thousands of people at the iconic Chowrasta.

Before the swearing-in ceremony, Darjeeling Police band rendered the national anthem.

The ceremony also ended the 44 months of struggle of GJM.

While Mr Shinde described it as 'vijay diwas,' Ms Banerjee dubbed the changed situation as 'historical.' GJM won all the 45 seats in the GTA election held on July 29 and the result was declared on August 2. (UNI)
