GJM all party movement plan in Darjeeling puts itself into yet another trouble

SILIGURI: Bringing it out of so far carefully maintained own exclusivity, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha(GJM) in Darjeeling hills is now interested to project the demand of 'Separate statehood for Darjeeling' as a demand of an all party platform.

But the desperate move to mentain own existance has put the party, already under trouble, into yet another political knot.

Responding to the call of GJM chief Mr. Bimal Gurung for a joint meet to chalk out a common struggle with demand for separate Gorkhaland state, only three patrties have come forward. But, none has clearly expressed their views to join hands with GJM unconditionally.

The move was taken by the GJM to maintain own supremacy in hills after losing its strength of remaining in good book of the TMC, ruling party in West Bengal, following lack of understanding in between initiated earlier on political interest of both- observed political analysts.

But instead of yielding anything positive for GJM gaining anything, the all party meet has put GJM under pressure. The old demand of Gorkhaland, carrying immense amount of sentiment of a large section of hill dwellers, had found many leaders and political groups to spearhead it time to time.

As the recent episode of that, GJM is bearing the torch since 2007 sidelining all other political parties in hills.

The party had practically become term dictator on virtually everything in the hills. Following its rapidly brewed up friendship with TMC, the party had Gorkhaland Territorial Administration(GTA) with high financial and administrative power in hills.

GJM president Bimal Gurung became its Chairman through a opposition less election. But, following the all party meeting call of GJM, Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists (CPRM), a major political entity in hills has asked it to scrap GTA first.

In one side, GJM cannot sacrifice GTA that has given high administrative and financial power to the party leaders.

On the other side, staying within GTA, it would be difficult for GJM to consolidate other parties for yet another spell of hardship of movement.

However, "It is GJM's problem and they need to find out a solution. But the problem is more for TMC led state Government of West Bengal that signed the GTA agreement in hurry just to project own activities within three months of TMC's coming to power without giving adequate considerations into the provisions of the agreement. That has lead the entire situation to the prersent stage," claimed senior CPIM leader and ex state minister Mr. Asok Bhattacharya.

While commenting on that, trusted lieutenant of Miss Banerjee and state Minister Mr. Gautam Dev said, "I am working within a jurisdiction and thus cannot comment on everything. But, maintaining peace and harmony in hills is the motto of our CM and I am working on that line."
