Dr. Pawan Ojha, owner of a private Nursing Home near Kanchan Cinema in Kalimpong, was today arrested after his wife Dr. Gyalmit Lepcha accused him of torturing her mentally and physically.
She had filed a written complaint against him at Kalimpong Police Station prompting the police to apprehend himSunday night. Ojha was tried today at the ACJM Court and has been taken into custody for 14 days and charged under Section 498(A) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have informed he is to be presented again on April 29 in court. Ojha, a veterinarian, is known in town as a respectful individual while his wife too is a well-known doctor at Kalimpong Government Hospital. The incident has becomean issue hot of discussion in town as it was shocking for many to come to know that people of such good repute could be involved in domestic violence. Those who have known Dr Ojha for some time have expressed astonishment at the incident. According to some family members, there had been an air of tension, stress and angst for some time at home but matters had been settled several times earlier with the help of social groups and well-wishers. But it appears Lepchacould not bear the violence of her husband her anymore and was forced to complain against him. When approached by the press, she refused to comment anything. Meanwhile, female social workers in town have expressed dismay over the incident, with social worker Uden Bhutia demanding the accused must receive fit punishment.
