GANGTOK, 9 APRIL: They may not be the the first choice of people with
minor to serious illness, but Amji, a traditional practice of Tibetan
medicine, is an answer to many serious diseases. Amji originated in
Tibet some 2500 years ago and has successfully cured people of Sikkim
since 1975. There are also many such clinics in the state.
The
practice, based on both herbal and\ spiritual healing has Amji, meaning a
doctor in Tibetan. ‘Connected to the philosophy of Lord Buddha, its
treatment has spiritual whiff to some extent’, says Dr Sonam Tshering,
an, Amji, practising in the Tibetan medicine unit at STNM hospital here.
Very few people are aware of this form of treatment, however, there are
many Amjis all over India, he said.
The Tibetan government in
exile and Buddhists, are committed in keeping up the practice. The
Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute at Dharamshala, Himachal
Pradesh, train Amjis for five years in medicine, considered equivalent
with MBBS. The institute now has 48 clinics in India and Nepal. An Amji
specialises in curing diseases like Arthritis, gastric, as well as
cancer. “The treatment once done will help in eliminating the disease
forever, however, its effects are slow. Eventually the diseases are
healed without any side effects” informed Tshering, who mans a clinic at
the Arogya Health Fair currently underway at Paljor Stadium here.
Sikkim so far as only three Amjis, continuing the Tibetan form of treatment. sns
