GANGTOK, 8 MAY: To mount pressure on the government of India
vis-à-vis the worsening condition of Tibetans in China-ruled Tibet, the
Tibetan Parliament In Exile is currently on a nation-wide campaign.
They
arrived in Sikkim on 3 May and since then they have been interacting
with the Tibetan Settlement Office here and several organisations
championing the cause of the Tibetans settled in the state.
Ms
Dhardon Sharling, a member of the TPIE, said: “The campaign seeks the
support from the Indian people and the leaders for our demand for an
immediate global intervention to end the crisis in Tibet.”
Three
members of the body ~ Sharling, Yangchen Dolkar and Pema Jungney ~ have
already visited West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. “Our campaign
is not anti-Chinese. What we demand is restoration of human rights,
peace and Tibetan language in Tibet. These are now under attack from the
Chinese government and its policies” added Ms Sharling.
The TPIE
reiterates that the United Nation Organisation should mount pressure on
the Chinese government to relax the stringency of its policies
vis-à-vis Tibet, she said.
“The ultimate objective of the campaign
is to make the Indian government to take a concrete stance on the
issue. At the same time, we take this opportunity to express solidarity
behind the Indian government,” said Yangchen Dolkar.
Ms Sharling
said while replying to a question that the Chinese government accusing
the Dalai Lama of instigating the self-immolation bids by monks and nuns
in Tibet reveals the insecurity of the Chinese government.
“His Holiness has already asked them to investigate if the Chinese officials so desire,” she said.
They said so far 117 persons have done self-immolations in the past three years.
The
TPIE members led a mass candlelight vigil last evening in Gangtok. The
rally was organised to expression solidarity with the Tibetans making
supreme sacrifices for the cause of their country, the organisers said.
