Siliguri, 27 August: Some human and democratic right activists from Siliguri have asked the state government to immediately release the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) leaders and activists now lodged in several correctional homes. They also demanded that the Central forces in deployment in Darjeeling Hills be withdrawn.
At least 11 organisations, including the Siliguri branch of the Association of Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), have served a memorandum, addressed to the chief minister, through the office of the Siliguri-sub-divisional officer today.
"Demanding a separate state illustrates democratic aspirations of the people. Besides, it is a political issue that should be dealt on the political plane. We witnessed the same in the past with regards to Singur, Nandigram, Lalgarh and Nonadanga tangles. We demand a dialogue to break the ice in the restive Hills and withdrawal of the CRPF and other paramilitary forces and release of all the GJMM activists arrested in connection with the old cases would create the ambience conducive to a productive dialogue,” said an APDR activist, Mr Bibek Sarkar.
Bandi Mukti Committee, Indian Federation of Trade Union, AICCTU, Students Youth Against Social Injustice, Krantikari Majdoor Sabha, Progressive Youth League were among the organisations represented when the memorandum was served.(SNS)
