The
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is determined in its demand for the inclusion of
mouzas in the Dooars into the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration
following the party’s success in the recently-held trilateral Panchayat
polls. The GJM is now demanding the cancellation of the Shyamal Sen
Committee survey report.
According to the party, the GJM-JMM alliance’s victory in the rural polls proves there is mass support for the Gorkhas in the Dooars region and makes the Shyamal Sen committee report redundant.
GJM central committee (Dooars) member Madhukar Thapa said the demand for mouza-inclusion in the GTA will be revived once the board formation procedure is over. The GJM-JMM alliance on Saturday formed a board at Banarhat No. 2 Village Panchayat and is expected to do the same at Lanka Para and Hantu Para Village Panchayats on Sunday.
Moreover, GJM-JMM candidates have also won a few Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti seats. Morcha leader Sandip Chhetri said the inclusion of 395 mouzas of the Dooars into the GTA has been in demand ever since the state government appointed former high court judge Shyamal Sen to conduct a survey on this.
According to the report, only two mouzas can be included into the GTA as the others show a negligible Gorkha population, while members from other communities are against the inclusion. But Chhetri accused the state government of manipulating the report in its favour.
He further said the government has assigned the Shyamal Sen Committee the task of investigating the Sharada scam also to report in its favour.
Meanwhile, observers here believe the success of the GJM at the rural polls could add fuel to the agitation for separate statehood here. (EOIC)
