Siliguri, 12 August : The Gorkha National Liberation Front leaders have sounded perplexed with
its rival, GJMM having stolen the show over the emotive issue of
Gorkhaland.
The situation has turned more tricky for them as the GJMM has succeeded in roping in other non-GJMM parties behind its agenda of sacrificing GTA for Gorkhaland.
“We are waiting for the Centre to make its stance clear on the matter. After the Centre spells out its stance, our president Subash Ghising would fix up the party’s position vis-Ã -vis the developing situation in the Hills,” said a senior GNLF leader based in Darjeeling.
It is, however, clear from the tone of the leader that the party is no longer confident whether their stance on the Sixth Schedule would help them to surge ahead in the volatile politics in the Hills.
Until recently, they oozed confidence while claiming that including the Hills in the Sixth Schedule was the best option left for the Hills with the dream of Gorkhaland remaining a pipe dream.
But the developing trajectory in post-Telangana concession scenario seems to have made them sullen as the statehood has usurped the political stage, consigning either GTA or Sixth Schedule in the background.
However, the party seems to deriving strength from the intransigent opposition of the state government to the demand for Gorkhaland.
The Governor’s statement issued yesterday stressing on the indivisibility of Bengal has bolstered their hope that Gorkhaland would remain unachievable despite Telangana being set to become a state.
“This time the situation in the Hills is truly unpredictable. We are in a fix. We must go for a strategy-rethink if the situation so warrants,” said another senior GNLF leader, Mr Mahendra Chhetri.
