Siliguri, 12 August: In a stance that might stand in contradiction to the ruling party’s
clearly spelt one of the geographical indivisibility of Bengal, the son
of the slain All India Gorkha League (AIGL) president, Madan Tamang, Mr
Sanyog Tamang, who had joined Trinamul Congress yesterday, said he is
for Gorkhaland.
“I support Gorkhaland. I am not against the demand. Everyone in the Darjeeling Hills wants Gorkhaland. My father sacrificed his life for the same cause. I have joined the Trinamul Congress as I want justice for the murder of my father,” Mr Tamang said in Siliguri today. “But I do not support the way the movement is being organised in the Hills ~ on the lines of Fascism. I think restoration of democracy must gain precedence over other things for the time being. I have joined the Trinamul Congress as I believe this is the only party that can restore democracy in the Hills,” he added.
The north Bengal development minister, Mr Gautam Deb, held a meeting with Mr Tamang and other senior party leaders in Siliguri today.“My party is of the view that the family should get justice for the murder of Madan Tamang,” Mr Deb added.
