Siliguri, 31 July: The Trinamul leaders associated with the Darjeeling district Hill
committee would hold an urgent meeting at Siliguri tomorrow to make
their stand clear on the GTA after its chief, Mr Bimal Gurung, quit his
post to begin a fresh agitation demanding Gorkhaland.
The Trinamul Hill committee convenor, Mr Rajen Mukhia, said: “We have not yet formulated strategies on the recent development in the Hills.”
“We have called a meeting tomorrow at Siliguri and leaders from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik, Garubathan and Panighatta have been asked to attend the meeting,” he said.
“The leaders will discuss regarding the present situation of the GTA and role of the Trinamul activists in their respective areas,” he also said.
“The state government and its machineries will tackle the situation in the Hills during the bandh called by the GJMM,” he added.
A Darjeeling-based Trinamul leader said: “We are waiting for instructions from the state leadership.”
“We will convey our decision and stand on the recent development regarding the GTA in the Hills to the leadership after the meeting,” the leader said.
Sources said that north Bengal development minister Mr Gautam Deb would be meeting with the Hill leaders in Siliguri
tomorrow.
Mr Rajen Mukhia ~ follower of Mr Subash Ghising, left the GNLF three years back then joined the AIGL and finally joined the Trinamul Congress, when Miss Mamata Banerjee came to power in the state.
When asked whether he would extend moral support to the GJMM to demand Gorkhaland, Mr Mukhia said: “Subash Ghising had started an agitation demanding
Gorkhaland.”
“He has finally established DGHC (Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council),” Mr Mukhia also said.
“Ghising’s follower Bimal Gurung renewed the demand for Gorkhaland and stopped the movement after formation of the GTA. No leader is in the Hills at present who will be able to fulfil the dream of Gorkhas,” he added.
“The GJMM leadership is just staging a drama to deceive the Hill people. The GJMM does not have guts to drop the GTA,” Mr Mukhi said.
“Have all 45-GTA members including Bimal Gurung stepped down? Mr Gurung has kept another way open so that he can return to exercise power in GTA,” Mr Mukhia added.
