The second day of the ongoing ‘janta curfew’ across the Hills saw the administration appealing to Mirik residents to step out of their homes and receive food rations. However, the households reportedly refrained and rejected the offer.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and other parties supporting the janta curfew feel the ration offer is part of the state government’s strategy to disrupt the peace in the Hills.
DRYF central committee general secretary Arun Ghatani said, “The Gorkhas scattered across the country are not demanding statehood for bags of rice, dal, sugar and other rations. The state government is trying to lure the people and create diversifications among us.”
He said the people have participated in the agitation by sacrificing many things, even their lives, and their struggle is not for rice and dal.
Ghatani said, “By distributing rice and dal the state government is humiliating the Gorkhas. Gorkhaland is not the demand of any leader but the demand of the masses.
GJM Mirik division president Fubi Rai said, “How can the Gorkhas, who did not starve in the 40 days’ strike in 1986, go hungry this time when they are voluntarily fighting for statehood? By distributing rice, dal, oil and salt, the government is trying to suppress the statehood movement. The false sympathy has been right away rejected by the people.”(EOI)
