More
than 500 members of the Gorkha community from neighbouring Darjeeling
and presently residing in Sikkim today organised a peace rally to
express solidarity with the ongoing Gorkhaland demand.
The rally was also a conclusion to the
relay fast started on August 8 by the Chalak Sangh and the Sikkim wing
of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
Initiated by the GJM-affiliated Janmukti
Chalak Mahasangh (Drivers’ Union), the march began at Deorali and
participants of various age groups were seen with the national tricolor,
GJM flags and placards and banners demanding the creation of a
Gorkhaland state.
Chalak Mahasangh president Rakesh Singh
said the rally was to exhibit their support for the statehood cause,
including the unrelenting backing received from Sikkim thus far. He
also thanked the administration for allowing the rally and the relay
hunger strike.
GJM leader Samuel Gurung later arrived at Gangtok and helped break the fast by providing participants’ juice and other drinks.
