Gangtok, 11 December
Forty-four students from Sikkim who were studying in Himalayan Group of Professional Institutions in Himachal Pradesh(HGPI) is heading back to Sikkim today fearing threats to their life following a scuffle with the local boys last week and alleged discrimination by the college administration.
One of the students while talking to the Himalayan Mirror, said: “The Principal Secretary, G P Upadhyaya had come to our college. However, he failed to meet our demands and to give in writing an assurance about our safety”.
“Although we apprised him about the level of risk, but he left us in danger,” said another student.
Forty-four of us have already left the college premises and heading towards Delhi. “We will be coming to Sikkim leaving the semester examination behind which has already started,” informed a student.
Officials from the Department of the Social Justice Empowerment and Welfare Department informed, “After being informed of the insecurity faced by the students in Himachal, the State government deputed the Principal Secretary of the Welfare Board to ensure safety”.
The official from the department added: “The Principal Secretary of the department communicated with the students in presence of the Law and Order head of the region along with SDM ensuring safety”.
“The students in the HGPI are on scholarship from the Welfare Department; however the students themselves have opted for the particular institute,” the department informs.
The students were also asked by the police official to identify the students who had threatened them. However, they failed to do so. It appears as the students who were falling short of attendance were supposed to face strict action from the institution fearing which they have created such a hype.
Earlier, the chairman of the institution Mr Rajnish Bansal had informed over phone that the Sikkimese students lacks attendance and fearing action from the administration, are creating nuisance irrespective of several requests to the students to attend classes.
The students have demanded that there are round about 10 colleges under H P T University, and we want to get migrated in another college under HPTU either in Shimla, Solan, Mandi or any other place that is safe for us in Himachal Pradesh.
The Sikkimese students studying in HFPI had complained about threats to their life following a scuffle between the Sikkimese boys and the Haryana Boys last week. The students had asked for a security from the Sikkim Government following which the Principal Secretary of the SJEWD had visited Himachal personally on 9 December to take stock of the scenario and had ensured safety to the students adjusting the entire day scholars inside the hostels.
