A team of representatives from Chomolungma UNESCO Centre, Nepal led by its president Hari Bangsha Kirant visited Darjeeling today to take stock of the state of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR). It may be stated that Chomolungma UNESCO Centre is an organization working for preservation of various subjects that are facing threats of extinction. Besides, it is also running a mission “Save Mount Everest” in Nepal. The organization representatives today visited different railway stations of the DHR along with landslides affected areas in the hills which has interrupted the movement of the world renowned toy train.
Talking to the media persons, organization president Hari Bangsha Kirant said they visited several places and railway stations along the railway route and took stock of the situation of different aspects of the DHR. He stated the organization will now send reports and requested the concerned authorities as well as the UNESCO to take appropriate measures so that the world heritage can be preserved and promoted.
However, on being asked about the team’s visit, a senior official of the DHR denied the reports of the team being affiliated to UNESCO saying that had the team been from UNESCO, the DHR would have received an official letter from the UN body. He said certain protocols are always followed whenever such a team sent by the UNESCO visits the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. “As far as I have been informed the Nepal based organization is an NGO and is working for the preservation of Mount Everest, but they are not from the UNESCO” the official noted.
The official said, “They might have journeyed in the toy train and visited different railway stations. Any traveler can come to Darjeeling and enjoy the toy train ride and visit different places for which there are no restrictions.” The DHR official said the Nepal based organization used the name of UNESCO for unknown reasons, creating confusion.(EOIC)
