Kurseong, 24 March: Darjeeling police has initiated an inquiry over an alleged assault on women by police at the Sonada outpost on 18 March.
Mary Biswakarma, 23, has filed a complaint at the Jorebunglow police station, claiming that the officer in charge of the Sonada police outpost thrashed her and her sister with a stick right in the outpost.
Talking to reporters, Ms Biswakarma said she had lodged a complaint on 17 March against her mother at the Sonada outpost regarding a family dispute.
The Sonada police called her the next day at the outpost, where her mother was also present.
She said a quarrel ensued inside the outpost between her mother and both the sisters (Mary and her 17-year-old sister Neha Biswakarma). “The OC, M Das, suddenly jostled both of us and started beating us up with a cane after shutting the door of the police outpost. No one was allowed inside to help us,” Ms Biswakarma alleged.
According to OC Mr Das, the father of the women who filed the complaint, said that his wife eloped with Bikash Rai on 17 March. He further claimed that they took along with them gold jewellery and cash.
The next day, the woman and her boyfriend were brought to the potpost, while the police also called the father and the daughters.
“As the father anddaughters arrived, the girls pounced on their mother. A woman constable’s efforts to control the situation were not enough and I just raised my stick and warned them against misbehaving,” Mr Das said.
According to him, a case under section 498A has been registered against the father on the basis of a written complaint by his wife, who alleged that she was beaten up and tortured by her
husband since the last five years.
In the meantime, a case has also been registered against all of the people of the family concerned over the scuffle inside the outpost.(SNS)
