Siliguri, 24 March: The Trinamul Congress said former Gorkhaland Liberation Organisation (GLO) leader Chhatrey Subba’s decision to join the BJP will not have
any impact on the party’s Lok Sabha election standing.Mr Subba, the
chief of the Gorkha Liberation Organisation (GLO), the militant wing of
the GNLF during the 1980s’ Gorkhaland agitation, joined the BJP in
Siliguri yesterday. "The switching of sides of Mr Subba will not create
any impact. The politics of the Congress and the BJP is the same. We
want an undivided Bengal and people in the Hills and the plains are also
in favour of that," north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb told a
Press meet here today.
According to him, the recent political developments in the Hills have shown that the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) has a poor poll standing in the Hills now. "Bimal Gurung is losing ground. The BJP candidate had sought support from the CPRM, but it extended support to Mahendra P Lama (independent candidate). These developments reflect their politically poor state. We are hopeful that our Darjeeling constituency candidate Baichung Bhutia would win the election with a minimum of two lakh votes," Mr Deb said. Mr Subba was arrested in connection with an assassination attempt on GNLF chief Subash Ghising.(SNS)
