The
Kamatapur People’s Party will support the BJP in North Bengal casting
aside its demand for separate statehood. The announcement was made today
by the two parties at a press meet held at the Jalpaiguri Press Club.
The KPP will ally with BJP in eight Lok Sabha centres in North Bengal and support the BJP candidate at the Kumargram Vidhan Sabha by-election in Alipurduar. Meanwhile, the BJP will back the KPP candidate at the Mainaguri Vidhan Sabha by-election in Jalpaiguri.
The BJP is committed to include the recognition of the Kamatapuri language and the community’s socio-economic development in its election manifesto to ensure the overall development of the region. KPP central committee president Atul Roy said the party took its final call upon the assurances given by the BJP.
Jalpaiguri district BJP president Deepen Pramanik said most parties have suppressed the demands of the Kamatapuri people from time to time. As a result, the community lags behind in terms of socio-economic development. However, the BJP will fulfill its promise once it forms government at the Centre, added Pramanik.
He further said the KPP’s decision has helped the BJP grow stronger in the region and the BJP candidate has high chances of winning. Notably, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Progressive Peoples Party are already allied with the BJP at two Lok Sabha centres, in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. (EOIC)
