Kurseong, 24 March: Senior CPIM leader and former Rajya Sabha MP from Darjeeling, Saman
Pathak, said Nepali language should acquire a linguistic minority status
to solve the identity crisis problem of the Gorkha/Nepali community.
Through this status, all the Nepali/Gorkha communities residing across the country can have their identity, Mr Pathak, the CPI-M candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency, told a party programme at the Gorkha Jan Pustakalay here.
He said neither Gorkhaland nor the sixth schedule or any autonomous body for the Hills can solve the identity crisis.
“Lakhs and lakhs of Gorkha people living in different parts of the country cannot return and reside in Darjeeling. Hence, through the linguistic minority status, the identity of all the Gorkha people can be solved,” he claimed.
He further lambasted the BJP and the Congress and said that the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM), though it is supporting the BJP, it should understand that the BJP is a communal party and it always bases its ideologues on ‘Hindutva.’
He said there are several communities and religions supporting the GJMM right now.
He added that everyone is familiar with the activities of the Congress party and its government. He said it is the Congress party that hiked the prices of basic commodities, while it is also a ‘corrupt’ party.
On the Trinamul Congress, he said it is a party that has been applying the ‘divide and rule’ policy to secure seats in the elections.
Mr Pathak said that considering the character and criteria of the Hill people, a single tribal status should be given to the Nepali community as a whole under one tree rather than giving such statuses to several communities.(SNS)
