With its construction coming to an end, Kurseong College is likely to get a girls’ hostel this session itself.
Principal of the college Prabhat Pradhan said almost all the major construction work of the hostel has been completed, and final touches are being given to the building.
The hostel will be open for students once the three-storey building gets electricity and water connection.
Mr Pradhan further said the construction of the hostel began on the premises of the college in 2009 under the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) 11th Five Year Plan. He said the building that can accommodate 30 students has been constructed at a cost of Rs 60 lakh.
Representatives of the UGC have already visited the college and inspected the construction work.
Though it was established in 1967, the Kurseong College never had hostel facilities for its students, girls or boys.
Mr Pradhan said he had sent a proposal in 2009 to the authorities concerned about providing hostel facilities for girl students of the college.
“Not only students from nearby areas, but those from the entire North Bengal, Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan are studying in Kurseong College,” he said.
He added that several new vacancies will be opened once the hostel operations begin.
Around 1200 students are studying in the college, while more than 50% of them are girls.
Mr Pradhan said that a playground measuring 140 by 50 feet is being constructed after clearing a forest land owned by the college. According to him, the construction work is almost over and that a volleyball and a basketball court has been planned at the playground.(SNS)
