Kurseong, 21 April: Condeming the recent incident when a Gorkha girl was raped in the
district of Senapati in Manipur, the Darjeeling-Dooars United
Development Foundation (DDUDF), an apolitical organisation based in the
Darjeeling Hills and the Dooars, has sent letters to the National
Commission for Women, Delhi, and the Commissioner, Manipur State Human
Rights Commission.
Talking to reporters, DDUDF Kurseong convenor, Usha Kiran Rai, said her organisation has sent a letter to the National Commsion for Women, and the State Human Rights Commission, Manipur, demanding judicial inquiry into the incident when the 13-year-old girl was raped by a 65-year-old tribal man named S. Mapuni a few days ago.
Protesting the rape, the Gorkhas in Manipur staged a demonstration, but surprisingly, police reacted against them by firing at them and lathi-charging them, in which two Gorkha youths were killed and several others were injured.
“The DDUDF strongly condemns the heinous act and atrocities committed by the Manipur police as well as the role played by the administration of Manipur,” the organization said.
She added that they have requested the commission to conduct a judicial inquiry on the incident, so that those responsible in both the incidents of rape and police action are punished.
Notably, several other political and apolitical organisations in Darjeeling Hills and in the plains have been condeming the incidents and demanding a high-level inquiry, including a CBI probe, on the matter.
