The Nepali
speaking people at north-eastern Indian state of Manipur, who took to
street following a rape on a minor girl from their community, have
called off their protest after the government promised to take stringent
action against the perpetrator and due compensation to the victim on
Monday.
The situation of Imphal, the capital of Manipur, turned tensed after the Gorkahli community intensified the protest on Sunday across the state following the rape incident on April 17.
The condition at Imphal had further escalated after two agitators were killed as police fired in the demonstration staged by the community as a part of the protest on Sunday. The agitating community had blocked the national highways that heavily brought the normal life of the state to a grinding halt.

Nonetheless,
the Gorkha community in Manipur decided to call off all of their
protest programs on Monday after the acting Chief Minister at Manipur,
Gaikhangam Gangmei, agreed to address the demand put forward by the
community. As per the agreement reached between the Manipur government and agitating community, one of the next of kins of the deceased demonstrators are be provided with a suitable government job and due compensation to rape victim girl. The 13 years old girl Nepali speaking girl studying at grade six was raped by a 65 years old man named S. Mapuni, a contractor from Senapati district of the state, on April 17. Two Nepali speaking protestors-- Tilak Paudyal, 30 , and son of one Prem Singh of Tispari Kanglatongbi—were killed on Sunday’s police intervention. |
