The Trinamul Congress today welcomed the decision by the Gorkha National
Liberation Front (GNLF) to support the party in the upcoming Lok Sabha
elections in Darjeeling.
"The Trinamul Congress is always for unity between the plains and the Hills, development and preservation of culture in the Hills. The chief minister has always laid emphasis on these issues. We welcome their decision," North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb told a Press meet here.
He said today’s political development will give a boost to Trinamul Congress Lok Sabha candidate Baichung Bhutia’s chances in the Hills.
"The GNLF has its traditional vote bank, and it will definitely strengthen our support base in the polls," he said.
Party activists were also upbeat about the GNLF decision.
"We were hopeful of winning the Darjeeling seat, but after the GNlF support, it seems the contest will be easier for us, as the GNLF is not a spent force and it still holds its traditional vote bank, both in the Terai and the Hills. We feel GNLF chief Subash Ghisingh is still a factor," a Trinamul leader said. Replying to a question, the leader said they were yet to decide on whether the Trinamul and Mr Ghisingh will go on a joint campaigning.
According to political observers, it was not possible for Mr Ghisingh to respond to the call of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) president Bimal Gurung and other political parties because he is now in the Hills after a long time.(SNS)
