More than 1 lakh oranges from various areas of north Bengal, Bhutan and Nepal will be showcased at the ‘Himalayan Orange Festival & Rural Tourism Bazaar’ in Salt Lake City Centre, Kolkata from December 5 to 7.
The historic event aims to promote orange farmers as also local tour and travel operators. More than 500 orange growers including tour and travel operators will participate in the fest and discuss ways to further promote trade between India, Nepal and Bhutan.
Organisers Help Tourism and Association for Conservation of Tourism are hopeful of attracting more than 5 lakh visitors during the three-day event.
Help Tourism convener Raj Basu said, “Rural residents from seven circuits of north Bengal and one each from the India-Nepal circuit and India-Bhutan circuit will exhibit exotic food items, handloom, traditional outfits, handicraft, cultural shows and also promote home-stays and eco-tourism.”
He further said the idea behind the event is to make Kolkata residents aware of the beauty of the orange orchards in Darjeeling and its foothills including the region’s rich culture, food and traditions.
Apart from oranges, the farmers will also display honey, Akbarey chilli, cardamom, avocado, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, Darjeeling organic tea, orchids, gundruk, kinema, organic rice, beaten rice, maize flour and squash, among other specialties of the region. Cultural troupes from the Darjeeling hills will also perform Jhakri Dance, Maruni Dance including and many more colorful traditional dances.
