Tents at Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill - a popular draw among tourists for early morning views of Mount Everest and the Kanchenjungha - is likely to get tents soon to host visitors at night.

The hill, 13km from Darjeeling, is about an hour's drive from the town and tourists usually take cars to see the sunrise from a view point there.

"We have decided to introduce tents at Tiger Hill where thousands of tourists visit every year. Our aim is to provide them with infrastructure so that they can spend a night there and enjoy sunrise the next morning," Gautam Deb, the tourism minister, said in Siliguri.

The land on which the proposed tents will come up belongs to the forest department.

Tiger Hill (in picture) gets around 1,000 visitors daily during the peak season and there is no boarding facility there.

" The department will not only introduce tents but also develop the overall infrastructure of the area. Initially, we have decided to accommodate at least 50 tourists at one time and later, we may increase the number of tents. There will be a cafeteria and parking areas. The department is preparing a detailed project report and will spend Rs 4.5 crore for these facilities. We are trying to complete the work by this year so that tourists can stay from early next year," Deb said.

Tour operators welcomed the plan. "Staying in a tent at Tiger Hill and watching the sunrise from there will definitely be an attraction for tourists," Samrat Sanyal, the working president of the Eastern Himalayan Travel and Tour Operators' Association, said.(TT)
