Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee rules out allowing Darjeeling to be a separate state

Kolkata, Mar 22 : Asserting that he would never accept the 'division of the state' by allowing Darjeeling to be a separate state, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said his government wanted a political solution to the Gorkhaland issue.

''We shall not accept division of the state. We want a political solution to the problems of the hills. Anarchy is going on there for the last few months, '' he told a press conference.

His comment came in reference to the continuing unrest and violent agitation, spearheaded by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in Darjeeling hills in support of statehood.

Mr Bhattacharjee also came down heavily on the Trinamool Congress for helping Maoists, who had turned the Jangalmahal area spread over three districts, the hotbed of extremist activities.

''The Maoists are another big problem in the state. We want to disarm them and defeat them. But unfortunately, the Opposition party is colluding with them in an irresponsible way. They are helping the Maoists,'' he said.

''In the last few months, there has been an atmosphere of intolerance and violence created by the Opposition parties to capture power as early as possible. The administration has to act tough in order to control this,'' the Chief Minister said.
