Gorkha News: Notify Gorkha pact, Mamata tells PM

Amidst threat of agitation in the Darjeeling hills, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in her meeting with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday sought an early notification of the tripartite Gorkha Hill Council (GHC) Accord by the Centre. Ms Banerjee complained to the Prime Minister that there had been “unnecessary delay” in the accord being signed by the President.

Ms Banerjee is apparently under pressure on failure to get GHC accord notified by the Centre, as a call for agitation in the Darjeeling hills has been given from February 26. “There is an unnecessary delay in signing of the accord by the President.
The Prime Minister has assured me that the government would send the accord to the President at the earliest,” said Ms Banerjee, while claiming that there is total peace so far in Jangalmahal and Darjeeling areas.
Though the chief minister denied that she raised the issue of Teesta water sharing issue with Bangladesh in her meeting with the Prime Minister, she said that she took up the issue of “leakage” in Farakka barrage.
“Our ministers have found out leakage in Farakka, which has resulted in Bangladesh getting 80 per cent of water in place of 33 per cent as per the agreement. Any disaster may happen in the area, which is in complete mess, as the leakage has been taking place since June last year. Our situation is horrible. We have lost maximum water. I have sought a high level enquiry from the Prime Minister on the issue,” said Ms Banerjee.
Ms Banerjee also refuted the claims that she had been seeking economic package from the Centre. “Kabhi diya nahi hai aur hum chahate bhi nahi haen...hum kisi se bhikh nahi maangate (we have not got anything from the Centre and neither we are seeking help...we never beg),” quipped Ms Banerjee.
