Upgradation of schools delayed as WBCHSE academic cell lays defunct

KOLKATA, 28 JUNE: With the academic cell of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) lying defunct, the upgradation process of secondary schools to higher secondary is getting delayed.
The deputy secretary of the academic section resigned a few months back. The assistant secretary was then made in-charge of the cell. Following his retirement, the cell has remained functionless.
This has created resentment among the headmasters who are being forced to wait for their secondary schools to be upgraded to higher secondary schools.
Since the new session of Class XI will start from July in most schools, the delay in the upgrade process has spread anxiety among the schools.
“The nod for upgrade comes from the School Education Department. But the process is carried out by the HS Council. The new session of Class XI will start in mid-July. We have completed our admission process. But the upgradation process is not yet complete,” said headmaster of a newly-upgraded school.
Over 300 schools have been upgraded to higher secondary in the past few months to accommodate the large number of successful Madhyamik candidates.
Each such school will be provided with a maximum of three additional teaching posts. But these additional posts will get sanctioned only after a proposal is sent from the HS Council.
“As the upgradation process being delayed, sanction of new posts seems doubtful,” alleged a headmaster.
The academic cell being almost defunct, the entire matter of upgradation is looked after by the president of the HS Council. “The vacancy is indeed creating trouble for the council. But, the process of filling up the key post has already been started. It will take some time,” said Prof. Muktinath Chatterjee, president, WBCHSE.
