Gorkha Janmukti Morcha calls off agitation

DARJEELING: Honoring the request of President Pranab Mukherjee and Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership on Friday decided to call off its proposed strikes and closure of government offices in the Hills.

Instead, an hour-long rally will be held everyday from March 9 onwards in which GJM supporters will shout 'We Want Gorkhaland' slogans in front of offices.

GJM chief Bimal Gurung had earlier announced a series of agitations in two separate phases - March 14 and 15 and on March 21 and 22. All government offices, including that of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), were supposed to remain closed from March 9 to 27.

However, in the meetings with the President and Shinde, the GJM delegation was requested to call off the stir. GJM general secretary Roshan Giri had said that they would take a decision in its central committee meeting in Darjeeling.

Gurung and Giri along with other leaders held a meeting in Kurseong on Friday. "The President, the Union home minister and Union finance minister had requested us to call off our agitation. We have hence decided to delay our stir," said Giri. But GJM has given the state and the Centre an April-9 deadline to ensure smooth functioning of the GTA.
