The Kalimpong Municipality’s decision of constructing a multi complex shopping mall after dismantling the Kalimpong haat bazaar has been surrounded by objections.
The Janmukti Byapari Sangathan, who is against the same, held a meeting today. The Sangathan decided that they will stand united and will not vacate the land. “We will not be going anywhere from here”, said Ravi Pradhan, Sangathan Secretary cum ward councilor. There are total 456 businessmen registered in the haat bazaar while 1600 people run their families through the shops located here. The shopkeepers are now scared about vacating the land as the model of the project has been prepared.As per the rules of the municipality a four storey structure can be built on the land, which cannot adjust all the 1600 shops. “More than my chair and position I am concerned about the shopkeeper security. Therefore if by going against the multi complex project I have to quit my position I am ready for it”, said the ward councilor.He further said that the construction of the mall will put the future of 1600 families in question. He said that if the municipality can construct the mall without dismantling the haat bazaar then they do not have any issues.In the other hand municipality president SD Pariyar said that the construction of the mall is being done as per the order of the GTA.
