Siliguri, 24 July: The Siliguri residents slammed police for law and order situation in the town following an alleged rape attempt in a city auto last night.
An auto driver had allegedly tried to rape a 17-year-old student at Sevoke Road when she was returning home from the private tuition.
The local people beat up the driver after the girl cried for help. Police arrested him. An FIR was lodged with Bhaktinagar police station.
The incident took place when the chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee was staying at Sukna Forest Bungalow, near Siliguri.
A local resident of Siliguri, Ms Urmi Roy, said they face arrogant behaviour from the auto drivers frequently. “I have faced arrogance and rude behaviour from the auto drivers many times. They even threatened me to leave the auto whenever I argued with them about the auto fares. But sometimes we feel insecure while travelling in an auto. However, I had never thought that such an incident would take place in an auto in Siliguri. After this incident, police may take steps, but after some time the situation will be the same again,” Ms Roy said.
Another resident, Mr Rajat Basu said it was up to police to ensure safety of the people.
“I cannot understand why police do not have any control over the autos in Siliguri. If there was proper control, then such an incident could have been avoided," he said.
A senior police officer said police would look into the issue.
“Such an incident has never occurred in Siliguri. We understand people’s grievances. Whenever we receive complaints against the auto drivers, we take necessary steps against them. But definitely we will look into the issue in terms of ensuring safety of the people especially at night and special emphasis will be given on monitoring the city autos," the officer said.
The Siliguri Metropolitan Police commissioner, Mr K Jayaraman, said police were trying to regulate the city autos.
Around 2,000 city autos daily ply on the roads of Siliguri.
The secretary of the
Siliguri City Auto Operators’ Welfare Society (SCAOWS), Mr Nirmal Sarkar, said: "Action should be taken against the auto
driver."
