Even as a Gorkha Janmukti Morcha delegation is making a pitch in Delhi to get the demand for a separate state heard, the party’s youth and student fronts back home in Darjeeling have upped the ante on the same issue.
The Gorkha Janmukti Vidhyarti Morcha (GJVM) today warned of an intensified agitation for a Gorkhaland state, which according to the association, could start any time in the Hills.
Addressing the media in Darjeeling, GJVM president Deep Thapa said, “Time has come to undertake hard decisions and people must be ready to face difficulties in order to achieve our ultimate goal of a separate state. We will not step back now unlike on previous occasions.”
The warning comes a day after the GJM’s youth front announced its decision to restart a fresh agitation that became dormant after the formation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration in July 2011. “We had never accepted the GTA as it was thrust upon us. However, we did take the new council as a stepping stone to achieve a separate state, and so have decided to restart the agitation now,” said Thapa.
The student outfit, however, refused to specify when the agitation would start, saying the matter would be kept a secret till the last minute. “Unlike on previous occasions, we will not announce our programme we have chalked out beforehand. The state government will not get any inkling. We can start our agitation any day,” said the student front president.
At the same time, the student leader hastened to add the agitation would be based on Gandhian principles. “The state government will be shaken by our agitation as it is a make or break situation for us. However, we also want to make it clear our agitation would not be violent as we believe in Gandhian principles,” said Thapa.
Top GJM leaders led by party general secretary Roshan Giri are presently camped in New Delhi lobbying with UPA ministers to get their demand for a separate state heard along with Telengana.
In fact, Giri reportedly met union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today and apprised him about the separate statehood demand. “We met the union home minister this evening as well as a few other important UPA leaders. We have told them the Gorkhaland state demand should not be by-passed when they deliberate on Telengana. We have also told them we would launch a fresh agitation if our demand is not heeded to,” said Giri over phone from the national capital.
Meanwhile, units of the GJVM across the sub-divisions of the Hills have also taken a resolution demanding the parent body scrap the GTA and launch an agitation afresh. “We have received copies of the resolutions taken by our various units urging us to should start an agitation. Following this, we submitted a written request today to our primary front to give up the GTA and take to the streets with the statehood demand,” said Thapa.(EOIC)
