Run with Roshni - marathoners to participate in Hyderabad run
“We Gorkhas are proud to be Indian!” - this emotional assertion will once again echo in the streets of Hyderabad when 15 Gorkhas from Darjeeling forming the ‘Run with Roshni’ group participate in the third edition of the Airtel Hyderabad Marathon on August 25.

‘Run with Roshni’, a project launched by Roshni Rai of Pedong, Kalimpong, who is a legal executive with Colgate Palmolive, Mumbai has achieved nationwide fame following her participation in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon last year. “My main aim of taking the team to Hyderabad is to highlight the potential of runners from Darjeeling. In the Mumbai marathon, team ‘Run with Roshni’ highlighted the identity crisis faced by Nepali speaking Indians in the country. With the Mumbai marathon being the only international long-distance event in the country, the potential of the Darjeeling team was not highlighted a lot although the participants’ performance was very good. Now, as the Hyderabad marathon is a National level marathon, there is a good chance of the potential of these runners getting highlighted,” said Roshni over telephone from Mumbai.

Runesh Tamang from Kalimpong, who came third in Mumbai Marathon 2013 (Amateur Category) by running 42km in 2hrs 51mins, will be running the full Hyderabad marathon, while the remaining 14 runners will be participating in the half marathon comprising 21km.

Prominent actor-model Milind Somen, Chennai-based Nolgroup Company promoter Rajesh Kumar Saraf and Catalyst Sports and Wellness Pvt Ltd from Bangalore have come forward in support of the 15 runners from Darjeeling.

Roshni says, “I am really amazed with the generosity of people like Mr. Saraf, who had met me just once in a flight and without any hesitation, he agreed to contribute Rs25,000 in support of my project.”

More than 6,500 runners from across the nation will be participating in the Hyderabad marathon, which has been designed according to international marathon standards.

Roshni has a huge fan following and has also got moral support from famed runner PT Usha, whom she met a few months back. Usha was quite happy with the performance of the Darjeeling team, she says.

Roshni is very confident the vision of ‘Run with Roshni’ will one day represent Gorkha runners from India in the Olympics and other international events.(EOIC)
