Mirik(Darjeeling) youth sentenced to 10-year imprisonment
Darjeeling,19 Dec 2013: A Darjeeling court today found a local youth guilty of forcing his wife to commit suicide and was sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment along with fine. Asish Lamgadey 23 of Phuguri, Mirik was found guilty for mentally and physically torturing his wife Rohini Tamang and creating an atmosphere for her to commit suicide.

Lamgadey was booked under section 498A and 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). According to Public Prosecutor (Panel), P. C. Thapa, the additional session’s judge, third court read out the sentence. “Judge Swadesh Ranjan Ray found the accused guilty and sentenced him to ten years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 2000, today. Lamgadey will have to undergo another 90 days imprisonment if he failed to pay up the fine,” he said.

According to court sources, the wife of the accused had committed suicide on October 6, 2011 by hanging herself from the ceiling of the house. The next day, on coming to know about the incident, Rohit Bhujel, a relative of the deceased filed a complaint in the Mirik police station against Lamgadey and his mother. A case was started and the mother and son duo were arrested on October 8, 2011 for torturing and forcing Tamang to commit suicide. However they were granted bail by the court. Today, the additional session’s court acquitted the mother saying she had no role in the death of her daughter-in-law, but Lamgadey was found guilty. (EOIC)
