Red Ribbon Carnival, a part of Rest Fest III and a Multimedia Campaign was inaugurated here by the Governor of Sikkim, Mr Srinivas Patil.
Organised by Sikkim State AIDS Control Society in collaboration with the Recovering Users Network, the carnival is the second phase of the multimedia campaign besides the youth intervention programme which was conducted in different Non RRC Schools across the state.
The programme had the presence of Chief Minister Mr Pawan Chamling as the Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Mr Patil called for commitment from all sections to curb new HIV infections and to render support to the people living with HIV & AIDS. He urged all to work towards the goal set by the World Health Organisation of ‘Getting to Zero’. This, he said, would be possible with sincere collaboration of all concerned stakeholders to spread the knowledge among the
people.
He lauded the effort of Sikkim State AIDS Control Society and partners for using Multimedia Campaign as a medium of imparting knowledge about HIV and AIDS especially among the youth of the State.
“Sikkim should be free of new HIV infection by the year 2020”. This vision was shared by Chief Minister Mr Pawan Chamling in his address. He urged the Health Department to work on Mission mode to achieve this objective.
He maintained the Government will ensure all possible help to address health related issues on priority and directed the Health Department to submit proposals to the Government at the earliest. He urged the department and concerned stakeholders to work towards making Sikkim an HIV-free, disease free and a sorrow free State. Endorsing the method of Multimedia Campaign used by SSACS, the Chief Minister stressed that knowledge is the only
medium to reach out to the people.
Earlier, the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour felicitated four Red Ribbon Clubs having outstanding record in the field of HIV & AIDS mitigation. The four Red Ribbon Clubs were RRC Mellidara South Sikkim, RRC Naga North Sikkim, RRC Department of Nursing Manipal, and RRC Tingley Secondary School South Sikkim.
On the occasion, a music video on Voluntary Blood Donation was also released by the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour.
Earlier, Dr Uttam Pardhan, Project Director Sikkim State AIDS Control Society, informed the gathering about the multimedia campaign. He informed that in the year 2013 the number of HIV detection has decreased by 50 per cent.
