“Kirat Khambu Rai Sanskritik Sansthan” a cultural organization of Rai community, today celebrated a traditional festival of “Sakela” at Kirateswar temple at Mirik lake premises, with an aim to preserve the community’s customs and traditions. Organization’s Mirik unit president KR Rai said the Rai community is a primitive community and it possesses all the qualities required to be called a scheduled tribe.
Notably the community has been demanding ST status since quite some time and the KKRSS has been spearheading the movement. Organization assistant secretary Lakshman Rai said the Kirat community will continuously fight for the righteous ST status.
The Kirat festival was attended by scores of community members from Mirik, Kurseong, Kalimpong, Darjeeling and other places.
