Kolkata, 31 December: West Bengal will seal all its border transit points with Bangladesh from 4 - 6 January in view of the general elections scheduled in Bangladesh on 5 January.
The decision was taken today following a meeting at state secretariat Nabanna in Howrah between the Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami and state Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra, Home Secretary Basudev Banerjee, ADG BSF B D Sharma and representatives of other security and Intelligence agencies.
Petrapole in North 24-Parganas, Chengrabanda in Cooch Behar and Fulbari in Jalpaiguri are among the border transit points that West Bengal has with Bangladesh.
The Union Home Secretary, who also separately called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was here to review security along the Indo-Bangla border. The meeting with Miss Banerjee assumed significance against the backdrop of the Bengal government's strong opposition to the Land Boundary Agreement Bill dealing in the swap of enclaves with Bangladesh.
Mr Goswami said: “We have discussed the law and order situation in the state along with several other issues. The discussion also focused on funds required to strengthen internal security. I have asked the state government to send us formal proposals.”
State government sources said, apart from other areas, they have specifically sought Rs 138 crore for augmenting the security along the riverine border areas in the Sunderbans.
State Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee later told reporters that 80 per cent of the discussion today was devoted to the security issues on the Bangladesh border. (SNS)
