The Darjeeling additional sessions first court has sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a minor, taking the number of such verdicts delivered to three this year so far.
Judge Partha Pratim Chakraborty on Thursday convicted Krishna Kumar Gurung (30) for raping a girl on November 14, 2012. The court also sentenced Binod Chhetri and Deo Kumar Gurung for complicity in the crime and pronounced a three-year jail term for the duo along with Rs 10,000 in fines.
According to public prosecutor Pranay Rai, the crime took place around 10pm on November 14, 2012. “A group of girls were singing ‘Bhailoni’ (sung during Diwali) at the house of Gurung. This was when he forced the victim inside, aided by the two accomplices. The remaining girls fled from the place in fright,” said Rai.
He added that by the time the victim’s friends informed their elders, who rushed to Gurung’s house, the girl was found in a disheveled state and bleeding profusely. “Gurung and his two accomplices were arrested around midnight and an FIR filed the next morning,” said Rai.
Gurung was charged under Section 376 (2) (G) of the Indian Penal Code, while the other two were booked for abetment and detained at the Darjeeling Correctional Home. “The additional sessions judge first court pronounced Gurung guilty and sentenced him to rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs1 lakh. By default he will have to serve an additional two years. The Rs1 lakh in penalty will be handed to the victim as compensation,” said the PP.
He said efforts are on to ensure speedy trials of rape cases in the hills as such crimes are on the rise. “Sexually assaulting minors is a heinous crime and must be dealt with severely. We don’t have a fast track court to deal with rape cases, but we are determined to ensure speedy trials,” Rai concluded. (EOIC)
