Darjeeling witnesses World AIDS Day
The District AIDS Prevention And Control Unit (DAPCU), Department Of Health And Family Welfare, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), organised a rally here to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS, as the town marked World AIDS Day today.
The rally, joined by the Federation Of Society’s Environment Protection (FOSEP) and other NGOs in Darjeeling originated from the District Hospital and went to Chowrastha.
Participants held placards with slogans about AIDS. Executive member of the Department Of Health And Family Welfare, GTA, Asha Gurung, also joined the procession. Later, she told the gathering about the importance of World AIDS Day and the various safety measures required to fight the disease. BP Rai, D Chettri and some other eminent members of FOSEP and other NGOs also addressed the gathering on HIV/AIDS and its prevention. In a press release, Mrs Gurung highlighted a number of issues related to HIV prevention and control in the GTA areas.
Some of the activities being undertaken by the GTA includes “targeted interventions through partner NGOs among high risk groups, strenghtening the sexually transmitted disease clinics, and 24-hour hotline counselling centre.”
“We request all government bodies as well as NGOs/CBOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS to come forward and help us in strengthening the DAPCU and thereby becoming a partner in preventing and controlling the problem of HIV/AIDS,” Mrs Gurung said in the release. (sns)
